He was born October 5, 1917, as Allen Packard Ellsworth in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. The tv host was the first child of Elmer Ellsworth and his wife Leila M. Allen.
The game show was diagnosed with stomach cancer in early 1980, which resulted in him taking a month-long leave of absence from Password Plus for chemotherapy treatment, and Bill Cullen filled in as the host.
Unfortunately, he slipped into a coma caused by high levels of calcium from medication taken to help fight cancer while on vacation in Monterey, California.
Cancer grew malignant leading to his unfateful departure in Los Angeles on June 9, 1981, at age 63.
